Choosing the Right Barcode Printer

By ebarcode

Picking out a barcode or label printer can be a difficult choice. At eBarcode.com we try to make it as simple as possible. Depending on the application you will have several choice but its good to start with a few simple options.

The first question that needs to be asked is do I need a Direct Thermal or Thermal Transfer printer.

Direct thermal works great for items that have a short shelf life or if the quality of the barcode is not as important. Direct Thermal printers use a special printhead that heats up the label which causes a reaction to make image. Because the ink is not being applied directly direct thermal labels have a tendency to fade and become fuzzy over time. Its also good to note that almost all Thermal Transfer printers also will print Direct Thermal.

Thermal Transfer printers will achieve a more dark, crisp image because they use Thermal Transfer ribbon. This is done by having a roll of ribbon move between the printhead and the label. Heat is then applied to the ribbon which moves it off the ribbon roll and becomes applied directly to the label. This is the most common form of barcode labeling for products and items.
